CFA
reached gold - by Federico LEvy
The second Open de Portugal,
held at La Varzea Polo Club, came to an end, with the final for
the Gold Cup, in which CFA beat defending champions, Millennium
La Varzea by a narrow 7-6.
In a very balanced game,
CFA took an early advantage, but a good work from La Varzea back,
Sebastián Merlos, allowed his team to hold on to a 5-5 tie
with three minutes of play in the second chukker. Quickly, Tiago
Gallego scored to give La Varzea a 6-5 lead.
A solid attack from CFA
dominated the fourth and last chukker. A 6-6 tie came with three
minutes to go, with a goal by Horacio Echeverry. With only 30 seconds
to go, a midfield penalty shot was given to La Varzea, but Esteban
Iturrioz hold the ball
and passed on to his brother Jorge, who ran all alone to the posts
at full speed to score the winning goal for CFA in the last second
of play.
Next, in the second match
of the day, Santa Clara defeated Lusitania 7-4 and claimed third
place. |
